A murderer who went missing while on release from a Lancashire jail has been arrested in Manchester.

Brian Lynch, 44, was serving life for a killing in Clayton Vale, Greater Manchester, in 1988.

Lynch failed to return to HMP Kirkham after visiting Preston city centre on Thursday.

Lancashire Police said he was arrested in Gorton with a 40-year-old woman. Lynch has been charged with escaping from lawful custody.

He will appear before Preston magistrates on 13 March.

A woman arrested on suspicion of harbouring an escaped prisoner has been released on police bail until 9 April.
