Entries have opened for a 10k charity run through the streets of a Lancashire town.

Thousands of runners are expected to take part in the Pennine-Lancashire 10k which starts at Burnley's Mechanics Theatre on Manchester Road on 2 June.

A Pennine-Lancashire 10k was staged in Blackburn in 2010.

It is being organised by Run For All, part of the Jane Tomlinson's For All Events, set up as a legacy to the Leeds woman who raised £1.85m for charity.

'Great buzz'

Her husband, Mike Tomlinson, attended the official launch along with Burnley-born Emmerdale actress Nicola Wheeler and players from Burnley FC.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche said the club was proud to support the event and there was "already a great buzz" about the run taking place in the town.

The race starts and finishes at the Mechanics Theatre and will pass landmarks including Rowley Lake, Towneley Hall, Thompson Park and Burnley FC's Turf Moor ground.

Burnley Borough Council leader Julie Cooper said she was confident of a great turnout for the race.

She said: "It's a great opportunity to showcase the stunning countryside that we have both here and across Pennine Lancashire, and some of our award winning parks."

Mrs Tomlinson raised money for cancer charities by taking part in a series of sporting challenges including the Great North Run, London Marathon and the Ironman UK Triathlon after being given six months to live by doctors.

She was appointed CBE for charitable services in shortly before her death in 2007.
