Morecambe buildings on fire in shopping area

More than 30 firefighters have been tackling a fire in one of Morecambe's major shopping streets.

Crews from Lancaster, Carnforth and Bolton le Sands joined Morecambe crews to tackle the fire at the corner of Yorkshire Street and Regent Road.

Firefighters were called just after 04:19 GMT to a ground floor shop.

Incident commander Mark Hutton said there had been fears there were people sleeping rough above the shop but nobody has been found.

Mr Hutton said: "We have searched the building extensively and we don't believe there to be anybody inside."

The fire involved a range of two to three storey buildings.

Fire crews were able to stop the blaze spreading and the police and fire services are working together to try and limit traffic disruption.
