Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is to move its headquarters from Fulwood to Chorley.

The project to relocate the head office to the Euxton site, which is an international training centre, is estimated to cost £10m.

Chief Fire Officer Chris Kenny said the current building on Garstang Road, was "a drain on resources".

He said: "It was built as a private residence for one family but is now workplace for 187 people.

"It has become a compromise in terms of space and suitability for purpose."

Mr Kenny added: "The cost of maintaining and heating the old building has been a constant drain on resources which will be more than offset by the energy and efficiency savings that purpose-built premises would guarantee."

The redevelopment, expected to be complete in early 2016, will be funded by the Fire Authority's budget and an additional bid has been made for a central government grant.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the future of Fulwood fire station would be up for review in 2013 along with the county's other 38 fire stations.
