Ribble cockle beds reopening postponed due to wind

Plans to reopen the cockle beds in the Ribble estuary have been postponed because of windy weather.

The Foulnaze Bank beds were closed in November after 26 coastguard rescues of ill-equipped and unlicensed boats during two months of cockling.

The North West Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority had given the go-ahead for cockling to resume from 1-4 October.

It said the fishery would not now open before Wednesday.

The authority said it would then review the situation and consider reopening the beds on Wednesday and Thursday.

Cockling resumed for a short time in August under tighter regulations and is due to resume again for four days from 15 October.
