Man hit by lorry on M55 motorway near Preston dies

A man has died after being hit by a lorry on the M55 motorway after his vehicle broke down on the hard shoulder, Lancashire Police said.

The man, in his 60s, from Fulwood in Preston, was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital after the incident at 12:18 BST, and later died.

Two lanes of the westbound carriageway at Junction 1 closed for four hours.

"It seems the casualty was attending to his broken down vehicle and has somehow been struck by a HGV," police said.

The man was driving a VW Bora. Officers appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Finn Quainton said: "I am also keen to trace the driver of a green vehicle that I believe may have left the hard shoulder just as the HGV had pulled onto it.

"I believe that person may have information that could assist the investigation."
