Man dies after car hits Blackpool lamppost

A 26-year-old man has died after his car crashed into a lamppost in Blackpool, police have said.

The man's blue MG convertible hit the lamppost on South Promenade, near the Solaris Centre, at about 06:30 BST.

Emergency services attended but the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The road was closed for about six hours between Harrow Place and Abercorn Place after the accident.

Sgt John Jennings-Wharton said: "We are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding this collision and so I would appeal to anyone that has any information that might help to come forward.

"At the time, the car was travelling southbound along South Promenade and we are investigating the possibility that the car had travelled into Blackpool from the Lytham area.

"As a result, I would also appeal specifically to anyone who thinks they may have seen this car prior to the collision anywhere between Lytham and Blackpool to contact us."
