Frederick Gilliard in court accused of wife's murder

A 75-year-old man from Lancashire has appeared in court charged with his wife's murder.

The body of Josephine Gilliard, 74, was found at about 10:00 GMT on Sunday at a house on Links Road, Blackpool.

Frederick Gilliard was remanded to appear at Preston Crown Court on 10 February.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple stab wounds and a blow to the head with a heavy object, police said.

The family said it was "stunned and devastated", adding: "We are an extremely close family and both mum and dad are loving and cherished parents.

"We are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy of the situation. The whole family would ask that our privacy is respected throughout this difficult time."
