Burnley crash: Man and dog killed when hit by two cars

A man and his dog were both killed when they were hit by two cars as they crossed a road in Lancashire.

Stuart Mather, 60, of Barrowford, was crossing Barrowford Road in Higham, near Burnley, on Monday, when he was hit by a Honda Jazz and then by a Vauxhall Astra following close behind.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. His Scottish Terrier, Hamish, also died.

The drivers of the two cars involved were uninjured.

Lancashire Police closed the road for three hours for investigations and are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at about 1715 BST.
