A former ambulance worker has been charged with murdering a nurse who was stabbed in a hospital car park.

Jane Clough was attacked as she walked to her car at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital on Sunday evening.

The 26-year-old had just finished her shift at the hospital's accident and emergency (A&E) department.

Lancashire police said her former partner Jonathan Vass, 30, of Conway Drive, Preston, would appear before Blackpool magistrates on Thursday.

Ms Clough was treated by her colleagues in the hospital after she was attacked at about 2030 BST, but died a short time later.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the mother-of-one, from Barrowford, died from multiple stab wounds.

Fabulous girl

Neil Standage from the Crown Prosecution Service said: "Having carefully examined the evidence provided to us by Lancashire Constabulary, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in the public interest to charge Jonathan Vass with the murder of Jane Clough.

"We have duly authorised Lancashire Constabulary to do so.

"He will appear at Blackpool Magistrates' Court tomorrow, where the case will be sent to Preston Crown Court to be heard at a later date."

Miss Clough had worked as a nurse at the hospital's A&E department for four years and her colleagues were left "shocked and devastated" by her death, its director of nursing, Marie Thompson, said.

Her parents John and Penny, who also live in Barrowford, said: "Jane was our beautiful precious daughter, loving mother of her baby Imogen and loving sister of Peter and Louise.

"She was a fabulous girl in every sense, she was so gentle and lovely and we are absolutely heartbroken by what has happened."
