Rossendale leisure investment safe from cuts

A £5.6m plan to improve leisure facilities in Rossendale is going ahead, despite cuts being made elsewhere in Lancashire.

Rossendale Borough Council voted in February to build a new pool in Haslingden, as well as a gym and five-a-side pitches at Marl Pits.

But despite the austerity measures taken by other councils, the authority said plans were "100% on track".

Subject to planning permission, work could start in January 2011.

Councillor Jason Gledhill, leisure spokesman, said: "I'm sure some residents will have been watching and listening to the news lately and be concerned whether or not the investment plans we have in Rossendale will still go ahead.

"I can reassure them that we are 100% on track - the £5.6m for new and improved leisure facilities is safe and secured and we are moving ahead with the project.

"We are in a position where we can continue to make this investment because we have had a thorough leisure review, looked at all the costs in detail, identified where efficiency savings can be made and managed the finances prudently."
