A 47-year-old man is believed to have shot himself dead during an armed stand-off at a flat in Kent.

Police were called to Esparto Way, South Darenth, at 10:40 BST on Monday after receiving reports of an assault.

A 45-year-old woman suffering from knife wounds was taken to hospital as officers surrounded the property.

Police gained access to the flat and found the dead man and recovered a firearm nearby. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

The man's next-of-kin have been informed.

A police spokesman said the woman's injuries were not life-threatening.

The relationship between the man and the woman has not been disclosed.

Kent Police referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission which then referred it back to the force for investigation.
