Comedian Harry Hill has received an honorary degree from the University of Kent in recognition of his contribution to television and the arts.

Hill, whose real name is Matthew Hall, was presented with a Doctor of Arts degree at Canterbury Cathedral.

He grew up in Kent and trained as a neurosurgeon at the University of London before opting for comedy.

"It's fantastic to be honoured by my home county... I'm a frequent visitor to Kent," he said.

"What higher honour than to be dressed up in a black hat and a red cloak on the hottest day of the year?"

Earlier this week, another Kent-based comedian also received an honorary degree from the university.

Sandi Toksvig, who has a house in Herne Bay, was similarly honoured with a Doctor of Arts degree.
