A man has died in a fire at a flat above a shop in Gillingham.

Fire crews were called after smoke was seen coming from the building in James Street in the early hours of Friday, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to rescue the man from the flat.

The man, who has not been identified, was given first aid by paramedics but died at the scene, a spokesman said. Kent Police and fire officers will be investigating the blaze, he added.
