A bus driver fled to safety after his single-decker vehicle caught fire in West Kingsdown, near Sevenoaks.

The Arriva bus, which was in service but not carrying any passengers, was quickly engulfed in flames as fire broke out in the engine compartment.

The driver pulled into a lay-by and tried to tackle the blaze with his on-board extinguisher, but it quickly spread and he had to call firefighters.

Arriva is investigating the cause of the fire, which destroyed the vehicle.

People living nearby were woken by the noise of one of the tyres exploding in the heat, shortly after 07:00 BST.

Police helped control traffic while Kent firefighters tackled the blaze.
