A body found in a river may be that of a 54-year-old man who went missing a month ago, police said.

The body was discovered by a kayaker in the Great Stour river between Grove Ferry and Stodmarsh, Kent, on Friday. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

John Harvey, of Minster, Thanet, was last seen when he dropped off relatives in Canterbury on 19 January.

His car was discovered a few days later at nearby Stodmarsh Nature Reserve.

Kent Police said his disappearance was "completely out of character".

A force spokesman said: "It is believed that the body may be that of 54-year-old John Harvey of Minster who was reported missing on Saturday 19 January 2013 but a formal identification of the body has not taken place."

He said a post-mortem examination had been held on the body and further tests needed to be carried out to establish the cause of death.
