Ten years for man who raped woman, 78, in Gravesend

Joe Street Street had denied rape, burglary and two assaults on police officers

A man who raped a 78-year-old woman after forcing his way into her home in Gravesend has been jailed for 10 years.

A jury at Maidstone Crown Court found Joe Street, 20, guilty of rape at a trial in November.

Sentencing had been postponed, pending psychiatric reports.

Street, previously of Jenkins' Dale, Chatham, was also sentenced to 12 months for a burglary and three months for each of two assaults on police, all to be served concurrently.

Det Con Zoe Traynor of Kent Police, who led the investigation, welcomed the sentence and praised the victim.

She said: "This was a horrific crime... and I respect the sentence that the judge has given.

"I have nothing but admiration towards [the victim]. She has been very brave. She has been strong-willed and has shown no anger."
