Maidstone pedestrian death: Man charged

A man has been charged over the death of a pedestrian on New Year's Day after a car hit two people in Maidstone.

Valdis Labeckis, 21, from Old Tovil Road in Maidstone, was arrested after a BMW hit the pair between Postley Road and Old Tovil Road at about 02:40 GMT.

A 34-year-old man died and a 29-year-old woman suffered serious injuries.

Mr Labeckis is due to appear at Maidstone Magistrates' Court later charged with causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving.

The man who died has not yet been identified.

The woman pedestrian is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, Kent Police said.
