Man arrested over Maidstone pedestrian death

A man has been arrested after a car hit two pedestrians in Maidstone, leaving one dead and one seriously injured.

Kent Police said a 34-year-old man died and a woman aged 29 suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash on New Year's Day.

Emergency teams were called to reports that a BMW had hit the pair at about 02:40 GMT.

A 21-year-old Maidstone man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police said.

The man who died has not yet been identified.

Officers from the serious collision investigation unit are investigating the incident, which happened between Postley Road and Old Tovil Road.
