Kent Police officer injured in Chatham hit-and-run crash

The vehicle which hit the officer had earlier been reported stolen

A Kent Police officer has been taken to hospital after being knocked down in a hit and run incident.

The officer had stopped a vehicle in Luton Road, Chatham, close to the Co-op store, at 18:50 GMT on Saturday, when he was struck as he got out of his car.

The vehicle drove off and was later found abandoned in Constitution Road, police said.

A police helicopter was used to help in the search for the driver who has not been found.

Eyewitness Carl Burton said: "[The injured officer] was on the path of Luton Road which had loads of broken glass.

"The uniform around his shoulders had been ripped to bits."

The vehicle had earlier been reported as stolen, a Kent Police spokeswoman said.

The officer was later discharged from hospital after treatment.
