A pet cat has had to be put down after being shot four times with an air rifle in a deliberate attack in Kent.

X-rays taken by a vet in Herne Bay showed ginger tom Charlie had a broken leg and four wounds from an air gun following the shooting.

Kent Police said the attack happened in the Callard Close and Mickleburgh Avenue area of Herne Bay.

"Whoever did this purposely fired at Charlie, using him as a target," said Pc Alan Porter.

"This is a cruel attack on a pet cat, causing significant upset for his family."

Police have appealed to anyone with information about the shooting, which happened in the 36 hours leading up to 17:00 BST on Tuesday, to come forward.
