Protest in Tonbridge over homophobic abuse

A young gay couple in Kent have held a public protest over homophobic abuse they said they experienced while walking hand-in-hand.

Organisers said about 100 people protested in Tonbridge in support of Reece Heron, 18, and Simon Bennett, 19.

Steff Mortlock, who organised the event, said she would like to see a bigger event to promote inclusiveness in the Tonbridge community.

The men claim they were shouted at, spat at and threatened in the town.

The demonstrators walked along Tonbridge High Street to the castle.

David Campbell-Lenaghan who was on the demonstration, said: "There was no trouble - just a few horns honked and some very bemused passers-by."

Ms Mortlock said Kent Police and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council had been "very supportive and helpful".
