Crash in Tonbridge came after police tried to stop car

A crash that closed a Kent high street for more 24 hours took place moments after police tried to stop a vehicle for an alleged traffic offence.

The main route through Tonbridge was shut after a Peugeot 306 crashed into a lamp-post in the early hours of Wednesday, spilling fuel over the road.

A 21-year-old local man, who was driving the car, is in a stable condition in hospital.

The road was reopened in the early hours of Thursday.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Police attempted to stop the car after the driver was reported to have committed a traffic offence, but the vehicle made off from the patrol and subsequently struck a lamp-post."

The force said no-one else was hurt.
