Up to 1,500 new jobs could be created if plans to expand one of the UK's largest shopping centres are approved.

Lend Lease, the owner of Bluewater, near Dartford, Kent, said consultations were under way to increase the number of shops and restaurants by up to 20%.

Bluewater, which also has a cinema and leisure complex, opened in March 1999 and attracts about 28m visitors a year.

A spokesman said a planning application would be submitted to the local authority later this year.

General manager Robert Goodman, said: "A key element of Bluewater's success has been its ability to evolve.

The new jobs will be advertised at the centre's on-site training and recruitment centre, the Learning Shop.

Dartford MP Gareth Johnson said he welcomed the proposals and the "significant" investment in the local economy.
