Dover Castle has been illuminated with lights after welcoming the Olympic torch through its fortified gates.

It arrived at the castle at the end of day 61 of the torch relay and was taken to the medieval Great Tower where a "torch kiss" took place above Dover.

To celebrate, the castle stayed open late for visitors.

It was then illuminated with floodlights and fireworks, set off from Admiralty Lookout to coincide with an evening celebration at the seafront.

Neil McCollum, English Heritage's general manager at Dover Castle, said: "Dover Castle is one of the great castles of England and we are delighted to welcome the symbol of the Olympics to it."
