Baby killing accused 'shook son'

A Kent man shook his four-month-old son to death after his crying woke him up, a court has heard.

Wayne Acott, 22, of Square Hill Road, Maidstone, has denied a charge of manslaughter at Maidstone Crown Court.

Sally Howes QC, prosecuting, said Mr Acott caused injuries to his son Mackenzie that led to his collapse on 21 January 2011.

The court heard how the baby was taken to hospital but his life-support machines was turned off a week later.

Ms Howes said: "It is the Crown's case that on that morning Wayne Acott went too far.

"He was woken up by Mackenzie crying. He wouldn't take his bottle. What effect did that have? All it takes is a momentary lack of control."

The court heard investigations at the hospital showed Mackenzie had bleeding to the brain, bleeding to the eye and brain damage.

A post-mortem examination found the infant died from head injuries.

The trial continues.
