Lottery funding may open Rochester Cathedral archives
Rochester Cathedral has come a step closer to opening its archives after the Heritage Lottery Fund signalled its support for a £158,000 project.
The archives of the cathedral, founded in 609AD, are currently inaccessible.
The HLF has approved initial proposals to develop exhibitions and staff will now submit a fully developed plan.
At its heart will be the display of the Textus Roffensis, a 12th century manuscript. Acting dean Philip Hesketh said it was "fantastic news".
Dean Hesketh said it was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring the Textus Roffensis home and reveal more of the cathedral's hidden treasures".
The Textus Roffensis is currently stored in Medway Council's archives.
