A trade union organiser has been selected as Labour's candidate to replace veteran MP Austin Mitchell in the Great Grimsby constituency.

Melanie Onn, 35, was chosen from an all-women shortlist to defend the party's majority of 714 at the 2015 general election.

Mr Mitchell, 79, is stepping down next year after 38 years as the North East Lincolnshire town's MP.

Ms Onn, who is from Grimsby, said it was a "real privilege" to be chosen.

The mother of one works for the public sector union Unison and studied Politics, Philosophy and International Studies at Middlesex University, the Labour Party said.
