Reedness to get £5m flood defences after tidal surge

An East Yorkshire village flooded during December's tidal surge has been told it will be given £5.1m to raise its flood defences.

Around 100 properties were flooded in Reedness, near Goole, when the River Ouse broke its banks on 5 December.

Andrew Percy, Brigg and Goole Conservative MP, said the water came over at a stretch which is nine inches lower than the rest of the bank.

The money will come from the government's £140m flood relief fund.

In January, the Environment Agency said the defences at Reedness were structurally sound but has since chosen to prioritise Reedness.

'Minds at rest'

Adrian Gill, flood risk manager at the agency, said: "After the tidal flooding, we brought forward the plan to review the defences at Reedness, and we have been working on proposals for the work.

"The final details have yet to be decided but the work will involve raising and improving flood defence banks between Swinefleet and Reedness Clough."

Mr Percy said the news would put Reedness residents' "minds at rest".

"People have been very focussed on this lower portion of the bank," he said.

It is hoped that the work will begin in the next few months.
