East Yorkshire coast gas find 'significant'

A North Sea drilling company has reported a significant gas discovery off the East Yorkshire coast.

Dana Petroleum, based in Aberdeen, said the Tolmount field could be one of the largest finds in the southern North Sea over the last decade.

The gas deposit, which is close to existing gas infrastructure, is 40km (25 miles) off the coast, north-east of Easington.

Dana Petroleum managing director said it was "delighted with the results".

Dana, which is owned by the Korea National Oil Corporation, owns half of the project along with the exploration division of E.On.

Paul Griffin, UK managing director, said: "Although we can't yet confirm the field size, it's clear that there is a strong possibility that Tolmount has the potential to be one of the largest gas discoveries made in the southern North Sea over the last decade."
