M180 motorway crashes leave four in hospital

A woman is in a critical condition and three other people are in hospital after crashes that led to the closure of the M180 in North Lincolnshire.

Both carriageways were shut for several hours between junctions four and five after four collisions on Tuesday.

A 25-year-old female car passenger from Scunthorpe is said to be in a critical condition with a head injury.

Two other women from the same car were taken to hospital with minor injuries and a lorry driver is also in hospital.

In the first crash, at about 15:15 BST, a caravan rolled on its side when it became detached from the car it was being towed by.

Two lorries collided in the subsequent build-up of traffic, causing all three lanes of the eastbound carriageway to be blocked.

A Fiat Punto car containing the three injured women was then involved in a collision with another car and a lorry. The final collision involved two lorries.

Humberside Police have urged witnesses to come forward.
