Suspected shoplifter drowns in River Hull after fleeing from guards

A suspected shoplifter has drowned after jumping into the River Hull as he tried to escape from security guards.

Humberside Police said they were called on Tuesday to a report of a shoplifter having fled from a sports shop at Kingswood Retail Park, in north Hull.

Police said the man jumped into the water and the emergency services made attempts to rescue him from the river.

The 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a file is now being prepared for the coroner.
