Market Weighton flood defence scheme under way

A multi-million pound scheme to improve flood defences in an East Yorkshire town has begun.

The Environment Agency said the £3m project would reinforce safety at Mill Beck, upstream of Market Weighton town centre, protecting properties.

The beck flows into the town through an area known as Monkey Run where a disused railway embankment helps contain water after heavy rain.

Agency officials said the project would help ensure the embankment's stability.

A new concrete spillway is being built to convey water from behind the embankment, returning it in a controlled flow to the beck further downstream.

The work is expected to take seven months to complete.
