A road in a market town will remain closed to traffic until at least the middle of next week after a collapsed sewer made a 13ft (4m) wall unstable.

Keldgate in Beverley, East Yorkshire, was sealed off on 22 January, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

Investigations found high groundwater levels were the probable cause of the settlement.

Engineers have dismantled the wall for public safety and a void under the road has been repaired.

The council said work had to proceed carefully because of the presence of gas, water, electricity and communications services for large parts of the town.

Nigel Leighton, director of environment and neighbourhood services, said: "The council is hopeful that this work will be completed early next week and an exact date for the lifting of the road closure confirmed."
