Hull school's demolition marks new start for students

Labour MP Karl Turner started the demolition process as part of the school's £27m redevelopment

A Hull MP has helped demolish school buildings as part of a £27m rebuilding programme.

Labour Hull East MP Karl Turner knocked down part of Andrew Marvell College to launch the second phase of the school's redevelopment.

The project is part of £400m city-wide Building Schools for the Future scheme which will see most of Hull's secondary schools redeveloped by the end of the year.

The new facilities will open in autumn.

The school opened its brand new building to its 1300 students last week. The next phase will see old classrooms replaced by a gym and all-weather sports pitches.

Head teacher Kevin Lister described the new facilities as "absolutely fundamental to learning in the 21st Century."

He said: "We'll be able to use the sports facilities right across the full academic year and be able to get outside when the weather is cold.

"It will benefit all the community because we have the community letting programme after hours."

Mr Turner said that the new facilities would help raise the students' aspirations.
