The murder of a grandmother who had been sexually assaulted and attacked in 1997 is to be re-examined in a police cold case review.

Winnie Deighton, 59, was found unconscious on a verge near her home in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, on 10 June. She had been raped and beaten.

Humberside Police is looking again at the case, as well as re-examining the 1979 disappearance of Gloria Bielby.

Ms Bielby was last seen leaving her Bilton home on 2 February 1979.

Mrs Deighton died in hospital, 11 days after being found.

In 1999 a man was put on trial charged with her murder but the case was dismissed.

Police said the investigations were part of a routine cold case review and there were no new leads or new information in either inquiry.
