Plans have been revealed for a college in Scunthorpe focusing on engineering and the renewable energy sector.

The £10m university technical college (UTC) in Church Square would educate 600 teenagers aged between 14 and 19.

North Lincolnshire Council said a formal bid would be sent to the government soon. If approved, the college would open in 2014.

Council leader Liz Redfearn said the college would take students from across the Yorkshire and Humber region.

She said: "If we are successful, and I hope we shall be, we get to know in March next year.

"I am sure we will make it happen."

Ms Redfearn said the development would complement the ongoing regeneration of Scunthorpe town centre and be "really, really good" for the area.

UTCs, which are government-funded, were set up so students could benefit from the expertise of local business, further education colleges, vocational education experts and universities.
