A site has been selected for a permanent memorial to lost trawlermen from Hull.

Hull City Council said it had acquired a site at St Andrew's Quay, the location of the city's former fishing dock.

The charity behind the memorial, Saint Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group (Stand), said it would run a competition to design the memorial.

Stand said it hoped the memorial would be ready to be unveiled in April 2014.

Chairman Charles Pinder said: "The history of Hull's fishing industry is closely connected with St Andrews Quay, it is therefore appropriate that the site for the memorial will be near to where so many trawlermen cast off from dry land to sail to northern fishing grounds.

"The site offers panoramic views over the river and will be accessible to people throughout the year.

"The memorial will be designed to ensure that this becomes a special place to preserve the memories of thousands of men who lost their lives fishing on Hull's trawlers."

Stand said more than 6,000 trawlermen from the city lost their lives in over a century of fishing in the north Atlantic and Baltic Sea.
