PC commended for bravery for tackling Hull park gunwoman

A Humberside Police officer has been commended by a judge for his bravery after restraining a woman armed with an air pistol.

PC Carl Bugg tackled 19-year-old Kerri May Wood to the ground in October last year in Queen's Gardens in the centre of Hull.

PC Bugg was uninjured although Wood managed to fire twice.

Recorder Simon Jackson QC ordered Wood, of Cherry Garth, Beverley, to be detained in a secure hospital.

Judge Jackson made the bravery commendation following the trial at Hull Crown Court on 25 May.

'Tremendous courage'

Humberside Police has now released CCTV footage of the incident.

It shows Wood firing the air pistol and turning it towards PC Bugg as he wrestles her to the ground, before being joined by other officers who help restrain her.

In a statement, Humberside Police said the officers were called to the park after reports that "a woman was holding a firearm to her head and making threats to kill herself."

"During the incident the officers approached the woman engaging her in conversation, but were threatened and the firearm was fired in their direction."

"However, while she was distracted by other officers PC Bugg took this opportunity to run at her.

"Showing tremendous courage and bravery he tackled her to the ground, forcing the firearm from her hand."
