East Cowick crash victims identified by police

The crash happened on a bridge over the Aire and Calder Navigation Canal on the A614 at East Cowick, Goole, at about 13:30 BST on Saturday

Three people who died in a head-on collision in East Yorkshire, including a father and son from Birmingham, have been named by Humberside Police.

Derek Sarkar, 46, and his son Ethan, 14, died in the crash on a bridge over the River Aire on the A614 at East Cowick at about 13:30 BST on Saturday.

Sheila Stavert-Lee, 70, from Wigginton near York, also died in the crash.

Mr Sarkar's wife, 43, and nine-year-old daughter remain in a critical condition in Leeds General Infirmary.

The pair were airlifted to hospital after suffering "life threatening" injuries.

The road was closed for a number of hours after the accident while a police investigation was carried out.

It took about seven hours to remove all of the wreckage from the area.

'Written off'

Mr Sarkar, of Sheldon Heath Road, was driving over the bridge with his son in the front passenger seat when their silver Volkswagen Golf collided head-on with Mrs Stavert-Lee's red Volvo V70.

A Humberside Police spokeswoman said: "It appears the Volvo had crossed on to the wrong side of the carriageway into the path of the oncoming Golf."

Debbie Hinchliffe, who lives a short distance from the bridge where the accident happened, said she was one of the first on the scene.

Eyewitness Debbie Hinchliffe said she was afraid one of the cars would burst into flames

"I was stood at my gate and I heard the crash. I ran to the scene. Two cars were written off," she said.

Mrs Hinchliffe said she feared the car which had been driven by Mrs Stavert-Lee might burst into flames.

She said she managed to get in the car, turn the ignition off and release her seatbelt.

She said Mrs Stavert-Lee's daughter was following her mother in another car and came across the scene.

She added that she had witnessed many accidents at the same spot during the eight years she had lived there.

"There's accidents every other week. We want speed cameras," she said.

"With three deaths, maybe something will get done. I don't know."
