140 jobs to go as East Yorkshire salad maker closes

An East Yorkshire salad maker is to close with the loss of 140 jobs.

English Village Salads (EVS), based in Newport, East Yorkshire, announced it will cease trading at the end of March.

The company makes prepared salads for retailers.

The firm said the redundancies were due to the "challenging trading environment" and the loss of a major customer who had decided to produce its salads in-house.

In a statement, EVS said that it was trying to relocate staff within the parent company the Bakkavör Group.

Conservative councillor Paul Robinson said he was going to ask East Riding of Yorkshire Council to provide help to the redundant workers.

"The big worry is the knock-on effect through the supply chain," he said

"Through drivers and others who will also be struggling to keep their jobs."
