A man has been charged with the murder of a convicted child killer in Full Sutton prison.

Damien Fowkes, 35, was charged with the murder of Colin Hatch at the prison near York, Humberside Police said.

Hatch, 38, of north London, died from strangulation at the prison on Tuesday while serving a life sentence for killing a seven-year-old boy.

Fowkes, who is serving a life sentence for robbery, will appear before Beverley Magistrates Court on Friday.

He is expected to appear via video-link from prison.

Fowkes was arrested after Hatch was allegedly taken hostage by a fellow inmate at the maximum-security prison.

A post-mortem examination concluded he died from strangulation.

Hatch was jailed for life in 1994 after being convicted of killing a seven-year-old boy while on parole for a previous child sex attack.

He had a string of convictions from the age of 15 for assaulting young boys when he was jailed for the murder of seven-year-old Sean Williams in Finchley, north London, in January 1994.

Hatch's murder conviction prompted a review of parole and probation for those convicted of sex crimes.
