Cookley canal towpath is site of serious sexual assault

A woman has been seriously sexually assaulted on a canal towpath near Kidderminster.

The attack happened in the Cookley area at about 10:45 BST on Monday.

West Mercia Police have launched a major search for the offender, deploying the force helicopter and dog handlers.

The offender is described as white, aged about 20, with messy dark hair and may be covered in mud.

A force spokeswoman said they also wanted to trace a cyclist who rode past the victim on the path shortly before the assault. He is described as white, in his 60s, with white shaggy hair.

Det Insp Callie Bradley said: "I would like to reassure people that incidents of this nature are rare.

"A large number of officers, including dog handlers and the force helicopter, are currently searching the area."
