Redditch firefighters get on bikes to tackle arson

Firefighters have started cycling round a Worcestershire town in an effort to catch would-be arsonists during the school holidays.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service have started targeting areas of Redditch known for anti-social behaviour such as bin fires.

The idea is to monitor the impact this has on call-outs involving arson.

It is hoped crews can also help educate young people about the dangers of starting fires deliberately.

Firefighters will go out on their bikes in pairs seven days a week during school holidays for the rest of the year.

Watch Commander Shaun D'Oliveira said similar community cycle schemes have been very successful in other fire service areas.

If successful, the scheme could be rolled out across the county, he added.
