Hereford May Fair: Seven-year deal agreed

Herefordshire Council and the Showman's Guild agreed the 890-year-old fair should continue

A street fair held since the 12th century will be staged for another seven years after a deal between Herefordshire council and the Showman's Guild.

St Ethelbert's Fair has been held in Hereford city centre since 1121.

In 2011, the Chamber of Commerce complained that closing streets for the fair made it "really difficult" for businesses in the city centre.

Abie Danter from the Showman's Guild said fair is a 'major event'.

Broad Street, King Street and Bridge Street are all closed off for three days in May to allow the fair to take place.

Mr Danter said: "This is a major event in the showman's calendar- this seven year contract gives us greater stability and encourages other members of the Guild to invest in the business which means we can buy more new rides."

The fair has been taking place on an annual basis since 1121 when King Henry 1 granted Bishop Richard rights to hold a nine day fair in Hereford city.

This was reduced to three days in 1838 by an Act of Parliament.
