About 20 people were evacuated from their homes after three gas canisters exploded in a fire at a house in Herefordshire.

Firefighters were called to the garden of the property at The Crest in Edwyn Ralph near Bromyard in the early hours.

They said a large amount of scrap material including gas canisters, a rubbish skip and a car had caught fire.

People who were moved from nearby houses to a rest centre at Bromyard leisure centre have now returned home.

The emergency planning officer for Herefordshire Council, Ian Baker, said: "Some of the people were living literally next door but everybody got out and they are fine and well. "

He said properties had not been damaged.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue service said an investigation was under way to determine the cause of the fire.

It said power lines in the area had also been damaged and some houses had been without electricity,

Western Power said its engineers had restored supplies.
