Wormbridge building site worker found in trench dies

A building site worker has died after being found at the bottom of a trench in Herefordshire.

Emergency crews were called to the grounds of a property off the A465 in Wormbridge shortly after 12:30 BST.

The man was found lying at the bottom of a narrow trench which was about 4m (13ft) deep, an ambulance service spokeswoman said.

The man had suffered a cardiac arrest and crews were unable to save him, she added.

West Mercia Police said an investigation, likely to be led by the Health and Safety Executive, would take place to establish the cause of death.

The West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "The man, along with colleagues, had reportedly been carrying out ground work on a building site when his colleagues noticed he had disappeared."

She said builders had helped medical staff lift the man out of the trench using a digger and ropes and ambulance crews and a doctor had continued advanced life support on the man once he was at ground level.
