Portsmouth City Council's £500k planning row bill

22 August 2014 Last updated at 21:14 BST

Portsmouth City Council has had to pay out almost £500,000 because of a planning dispute, it has emerged.

The authority had given permission for new flats behind Eastney beach but later refused a proposed access road.

When the developer took legal action the council claimed it was trying to protect the Dartford warbler, thought to be nesting on the beach.

But the council lost the case.
