Level crossings on south west route to close amid safety fears

22 August 2014 Last updated at 20:10 BST

Network Rail is to close 35 level crossings across south west trains routes amid safety fears.

The rail operator has said they are now too dangerous to be left as they are.

The old footpath across the track at Liss, in Hampshire, was among the first to be shut and has been replaced with a footbridge.

Some communities are fighting proposed closures, while others have been campaigning for safety improvements.
