An elderly man has died in hospital after being crushed by a falling tree on Southampton Common.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spent more than an hour freeing the man after the tree fell on him at about 13.00 BST on Wednesday.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died, Hampshire Constabulary said.

The man's death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

An investigation is expected to begin, led by the Health and Safety Executive.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 13.10. There was a male casualty who was trapped by a fallen tree. We released him using specialist lifting gear and he was taken to hospital."

Ten fire fighters went to the common, with two fire engines from St Mary's and Redbridge and one support unit, with specialist equipment.
